Thirty-one gratitudes for this life; above all else:

1. I am grateful for every morning I’ve woken to the sun rising through my window— grateful for every beautiful room that has held me as I have grown with the days.

2. I’m especially grateful for the kind of mornings where I meet the sun rising from the field; or the forest, or even just the house four doors downs on a morning walk— I am grateful for every opportunity this life gives me for these kind of mornings.

3. For the mornings; for the perfect morning walks where I walk with the baby through the neighborhood and down to the facsimile of a creek that was miraculously spared from suburban development— the baby that is not my own but loves me nonetheless because she understands that we are kin, and that we are kin to every cardinal, robin, catbird, mockingjay, sparrow, crow, and goldfinch that we are learning to name; for the maples that give their leaves through cerulean blue on those perfect autumn afternoons, and for the cedar so soft i…
